Workers slung deli meat on the racks. Stockers ran up and down ladders. Boxes collapsed on the floor.

Such was the scene Tuesday at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market at 6436 E. Spring St., as owner-operators Jonathan and Jennifer Lawton and some of the store’s 27 employees, including a handful who moved with the husband-wife duo from Northern California, prepared for opening day Thursday.

The Emeryville-based market chain has 240 locations on the West Coast, and in Idaho, Nevada and Pennsylvania, and the Long Beach store is the fifth of 19 new Grocery Outlet markets scheduled to open in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas by the end of the year, which the company says will translate into 600 new jobs.
